Private-school use requires City and education approvals

The site case

Preserve the landmark. Activate the field. Build the AI generation.

Digital-UNI proposes a disciplined public-private evaluation of the Civic Auditorium as a secure education, technology, athletics, and workforce campus serving Santa Monica families and the wider region.

Accurate land-use position

The Civic is in the Civic Center Specific Plan area, adjacent to Historic Belmar Park and near Santa Monica High School. Digital-UNI does not claim that the property is already zoned or entitled for private-school use. Any conversion requires City land-use review, lawful site control, historic-preservation review, permits, safety compliance, and educational authorization.

Formal notice · August 26, 2026

Notice of intent to pursue a municipal initiative petition

To Mayor Caroline Torosis, Mayor Pro Tem Jesse Zwick, and the Santa Monica City Council

Civic Auditorium transformation · 1855 Main Street

Digital-UNI has formally notified City leadership of its intent to pursue a municipal initiative petition asking Santa Monica voters whether the Civic Auditorium should be evaluated and reserved for transformation into Santa Monica’s First AI-Native Private High School, an applied AI education campus, and a workforce and compute center.

The proposed measure would seek a transparent City evaluation of landmark preservation, an AI high school, workforce programs, compute infrastructure, and approved shared athletics programming. It would not itself grant Digital-UNI ownership, a lease, funding, permits, accreditation, or development approval.

Historic Belmar Park is a 3.5-acre municipal sports complex adjacent to the Civic. AI Pioneers Sharks soccer and football, youth clinics, and sports analytics would require City permits, scheduling, existing community-use protections, and appropriate athletics approvals.

This community campaign is notice and public outreach—not the statutory Notice of Intention, authorization to circulate petitions, or a legally valid ballot signature. Formal qualification must follow the California Elections Code, Santa Monica Municipal Code, City Clerk procedures, signature verification, and required public action.

Community registration—not a ballot signature

This online form records support for Digital-UNI’s civic campaign. It is not an electronic signature on a municipal initiative petition. The City states that ballot qualification requires the State Elections Code process and signatures from 10% of registered City voters for an initiative, or 15% for a charter amendment.
